Macula peccati is the Latin term used in Catholic theology to describe the "stain of sin," or the state that we are in without Christ. It's also called the privation of grace (the state of being without grace).
I just learned that while I was searching the Internet for a suitable title for this picture, and I thought I'd share the meaning.
I think it corresponds with the Protestant idea of "original sin," the state of sinfulness which is passed down to us from Adam like a genetic disease; I'm not entirely sure that all Protestants share this idea, though.
